The new year is upon us, and you are (or aren’t) making new year’s resolutions. Your resolution may be lofty, or it may be simple. Regardless, for most of us, it will be difficult to sustain a resolution:we forget it quickly, we don’t commit to it like we believed, or we end the effort because we don’t know how/don’t have the energy to make it work. So, for the moment, let’s forget about resolutions, and instead look at small changes. |
Where Do You Start?Changing pretty much anything in our lives takes effort and focus. And that can be, in our busy, chaotic lives, hard to manage well (hey, if you have a peaceful life, please don’t change that!). So, doing things that we can achieve quickly, things that take less large effort all at once, will be easier to maintain over time. But, a key for this is starting where we are, and with where we have the best chance of managing what we change – our thoughts. Energy as ThoughtsWhile you may have heard the concept that energy follows thought, recognize as well that thoughts are energy in themselves. So, simply said, thoughts have power. And we can increase or decrease their power readily. Consider this: thoughts are energy. And now, this: THOUGHTS ARE ENERGY. Which seemed more powerful? This is a visual, but the idea for your actual thoughts is very similar. Give the thought amplitude (more emotion) and it will be stronger, period. Maintaining EnergyFrankly, I have found that maintaining a thought for a while can be exhausting (except worry… that one seems to have the Energizer Bunny running all the time, right?). So, how do you make this work? How do you keep a thought consistent and strong long enough to actually see changes? Having something to anchor the thought – a simple touchstone – can make this process much easier. You imbue that touchstone with energy, and then all you need do is call up the touchstone, and the energy flows from it. This is like when you look at a picture of a loved one; you instantly can feel the love, the memories, the details of that person and their energy. So, what does your touchstone look like? It can be a person (real or fictional) you want to emulate. It can be a spirit animal, a picture, a statue or object that has special meaning. Maybe you have a picture of someone special, and you use that to anchor the thought you want to expand – such as “I am unconditionally loved”. Or, you want to have more confidence, and so you imagine a hero from your life, movies, books, etc., and you use that hero to remind you that you are growing in confidence – that they did it, and so you can as well. Small ChangesSo, now you have a thought and understand it’s power, and you have a touchstone to help you maintain it. What next, you ask? Every day, and when you feel a need, reach to that touchstone – for a moment, or a minute, but you do not need to spend a long time on it. This calls up the energy of the change you want and expect. Pause, and for that moment or longer, feel the energy of the thought – allow it to flow and have a life for that brief period, and it will flow through you and out into the world around you. Then, recognize that every small change matters. It may seem at times like there is no progress, but there is, because you keep sharing with yourself the thought and that puts the energy out around you. That small candle you have lit has banished some darkness. Keeping the candle lit, and giving it attention each day, will make it brighter. Remember, thoughts are energy, so as you focus on it, that energy MUST get brighter with time. It’s simply the way things work. New Year – New ThoughtSo, consider this thought – that change in life means change in thought. If you continue thinking in the same patterns, you will continue to have similar outcomes. But, believing (knowing) that if you make small changes in your thoughts, over time, that will steer the ship of your mind in a whole new direction. Wishing you a beautiful, happy new year! |
