The Heaviness of Things

Sometimes you don’t realize how heavy something is until you let go of it.

Feeling Weight

This week, I retired from a long career at a large bank. Because this was planned, and I gave ample notice to my manager, I had expected the preparation, the transfer of work, and sharing of duties would be easy. It was not. I found it difficult to let go, to have others doing ‘my’ work, and to see them doing things in ways I had not expected.

It was a surprising lesson to learn how much I had invested of myself and my focus in work, and in the team I managed. Even though the goal and plan was clear, the work of releasing was hard. I didn’t know how heavy this really had become – how much of my energy and thought was consumed with my work (although my husband knew!). It wasn’t until I started to finally let go that I saw all the weight I had carried.

Making Space for New

We all carry things with us – it’s part of living on Earth. But over time, some of what we have grows too heavy, but we don’t see that. We don’t see how it keeps us from things we may want, because it’s now weighing us down so much, we see less clearly; the lights are darker; we have limited (or no) energy to do anything differently.

For me, the weight of the work (especially the last few months) kept me from seeing how to get to my goal of working full-time as a psychic medium, healer, and consultant. However, seeing how much weight I was still carrying helped me realize that it was blocking me from even thinking about how to move forward.

Releasing and Re-balancing

Not all change is as dramatic or impactful as retirement or changing jobs. Those things simply magnify the scope of release. But any change we may want to undertake can and will be harder if we do not look at what we may have in our life that is too heavy.

We do not always need to jettison things from our lives to make it lighter. Sometimes, the heavy weight is all in one area (work, family, school) and we don’t see that we are now unbalanced, and that as a result, we lurch around a center, rather than walking smoothly and simply in the direction we most want to go.

While not always easy, simply looking at what you hold onto so hard, at what may be taking all your energy or attention, will make the difference.  Lightening where you are unbalanced, or even truly letting some parts (or all) of what you have held onto go, will give you the room to allow all things in your life to go more smoothly.

Love, and until next time.
